The Neo Geo CD: A Forgotten Era in Gaming History

In a time when console manufacturers were still figuring out how to effectively utilize the then-newly introduced CD-ROM technology, SNK decided to take a bold step forward with the release of their own CD-based home entertainment system - the Neo Geo CD. Released back in 1994, this behemoth of an arcade machine was designed to bring high-quality gaming directly into living rooms across North America and beyond.

But despite its lofty ambitions, the NeoGeo CD ultimately failed to leave a lasting impression on the gaming world. Perhaps it's no surprise given some of the... questionable titles that made their way onto the system's ever-growing library.

One such title was Aero Fighters 2 (also known in certain regions as Sonic Wings II), an arcade shooter that promised much but delivered little in terms of engaging gameplay or memorable graphics. Released alongside its more popular brethren on various NeoGeo platforms around this same period, AeroFightersII struggled to stand out from the crowd due largely down to its lackluster controls and dated presentation.

Other titles that failed to impress include 2020 Super Baseball; 3 Count Bout (a rather uninspired take on the classic boxing genre); and Aggressors of Dark Kombat - a fighting game series that seemed more interested in throwing every possible move at players than actually delivering anything remotely close to enjoyable gameplay experience.

In fact, upon closer inspection it becomes clear that many titles released for the NeoGeoCD were simply re-releases or budget versions of existing SNK games already available on other platforms. With so little original content being created specifically with this console in mind (and what there was often falling far short of expectations), it's no wonder then that consumer interest began to wane.

Despite its failure as a commercial success, however, the NeoGeoCD still holds a certain nostalgic appeal for those old enough to remember playing on such behemothic machines back during their heyday. For anyone curious about what gaming was like before HD graphics and 1080p resolution became de rigueur (and trust me - you probably aren't), then perhaps giving this retro relic of an era the once over might be worth a try.
